I don't see why they can't be compared. But aside from comparison,
there is a question that has been coming up in a lot of depts lately:
Are there any political reasons (ie ITS policies) that prevent a dept from
using a hub instead of requesting a new line be installed (which takes
months at best)? If a hub is used, does ITS still charge the
installation fee?
If this isn't something people on the list can address, is there someone
in ITS that could be contacted with this question?
This might be getting a little off topic, but I suppose there are a few
people on the list who could use this information in their depts for their
studies.
Bringing it back a little more to those of us in dorm rooms, my previous
CA explained the ITS policy for hubs and multiple connections in rooms was
"if you are willing to pay for it, fine by us", and there was no extra
charge. This was great news for those of us who need a *NIX box as well as
Win 95/98/NT in our rooms for our studies. Shawn's message suggested
"this may change". Was that caution not to get caught by any sudden
change in ITS policy, or are there any rumors floating around ITS about
dorm connections?
While I'm asking lots of questions, why stop now? :)
Is there any talk within ACS about formal ways to incorporate student
input into policy decisions? I'd be willing to wager linux users such as
ourselves are more likely than the average student to have more than one
computer, and therefore need multiple connections. We also have other
unique needs (DNS entries, etc). I would imagine ACS asking for input
would only be a win-win situation. Any thoughts on this?
