Anyway, I thought this was kind of neat, so I figured I'd share.
Over Thanksgiving, I set up a home LAN at my parents' house, and
converted their oldish Gateway into a file server. This was also done in
anticipation of DSL service being offered in our town - it turns out we're
close enough to the switching office for it to work. So, the plan was to
make the Gateway literally a gateway running IP masquerade. Maybe turn it
into a firewall too.
In March, Bell Atlantic announced that they'll be offering DSL
service in our town, for real this time. So over spring break we ordered
all the DSL equipment and signed a contract with our ISP. Finally, we got
an e-mail from them yesterday saying Bell Atlantic'd turned on our
circuit. And, conveniently enough, we're assigned a fixed IP.
So, I called up my Dad this afternoon and walked him through
changing the IP address on eth1 (eth0 is connected to the internal LAN).
It worked flawlessly. So I said, "O.K.; I'll call back in a few minutes
once I've set up IP masquerade on the Gateway."
And then I ssh'ed in and took care of it remotely. Maybe I'm just
overwhelmed by the novelty of logging in to home computers which
heretofore had only known the internet through non-persistent 56K dialup,
but I thought this was really cool.
The longest part of the whole process was when I called again and
we configured the new computer to use the gateway. They use it as a
Windows box (though I've got a Linux installation on it as well), and
changing the "default gateway" network setting required a reboot. :)
