too much log file

I got now my ADSL running but it produces tons of log data, most of the
following type
May 31 13:24:21 marvin pppd[10143]: sent [LCP EchoReq id=0x5f
magic=0xa0370655]
May 31 13:24:21 marvin pppd[10143]: rcvd [LCP EchoRep id=0x5f
magic=0x19abb03]

this happens every 10 or so seconds, thus growing to 4MB within 6h

it seems like a status line from pppd, what does it mean exactly?
how can I turn it off?
