X question

OKay, I have a linux box down here at home and I tried as an experiment to
set my display variable to this dialed in machine, it worked great, I got
a locat display of my machine at school (albeit quite slow) but now when I
ps ax I get alot of processes for X with no controlling terminal. Does
this mean when I return to school that I will have lost these processes
from the local control of my display? I guess its a silly question but I'm
curious. Also is there a way to nohup a process and then somehow force it
to give output back to you, or say I get disconnected from my dialin when
ftp'ing from my machine at yale to another machine on the internet. What
happens to that process? These are probably simple FAQ or basic unix
questions but I might as well ask.:)
