As Matt has already so eloquently pointed out, this list, dedicated to
discussion of things related to linux, is up and running. I had wanted to
wait until my post on the newsgroup yale.users.linux had circulated a bit
before the official kickoff.
So anyway, we all know the idea behind a list. It isn't moderated,
planned, or executed by anyone; please be considerate and conscious of
when your messages apply to the whole group and when they apply only to
one person. Blah blah blah. Also, please try to keep your inbox unlocked,
and notify me if your email address should be come invalid. As some have
already discovered (due to my incompetence), if a message sent to the list
bounces from any address on the list, the sender receives the error
message.
If you have a pantheon account and you want to know who's on the list, cat
~ccf4/linux-list. If you don't have a pantheon account, and you still want
to know who's on the list, you can ask me.
Also, at some point I'll probably set up a web-accessible archive of
messages sent to the list, so for instance if you finally get around to
setting up something people were explaining a month ago, you can still
get the messages.
OK, that's about it for the formal welcome. If you have any list-related
questions, or you want to be removed from the list, please email me.

It is conceivable that one day, computers will be better than humans at
nearly everything. I can imagine that a person might someday have a
computer for a best friend. That will be sad--like having a dog for your
best friend but even sadder.
