I used to have all kinds of problems with it, and when I did get it
working, it was slow as 'doze. Now I run gtkicq, which has more
functionality than the java one.

It's probably a good idea to look in the HOWTO's (sound and
hardware-compat) to check which boards are best supported. If the card
is one of those listed in the kernel sound config, then the setup should
be pretty smooth and simple.
