Latin American Collection

The Latin American Collection of the Yale Library is one of the oldest and largest collections of its kind in the United States. The collection has approximately 522,000 printed volumes and is growing at a rate of 10,000 titles per year. The materials are mostly in Spanish, Portuguese, English, and French, but there also several thousand titles in indigenous languages such as Nahuatl, Quechua, Aymara, Quiche, Pipil, and others. The collection has subscriptions to over 3,500 Latin American periodicals and monographic series. In addition to printed matter, the collection is rich in manuscript material, and it contains a newspaper microfilm collection of 15,000 reels, as well as such non-book materials as photographs, documentary film, sound recordings, and sheet maps.

The Yale University Library houses important primary source collections related to Latin America and it is considered one of the finest in the United States for unpublished documents on Latin American history and other disciplines, especially from Mexico and Peru. These collections represent the fruit of over a hundred years of collecting Latin American materials, and document the social history of Latin America from the colonial period to the present. The unique scope of the collection allows researchers to approach the region’s history from a number of perspectives, including, but not limited to, politics, government, economics, diplomacy, culture, military, and religion.

The maintenance of the Latin American Collection is made possible partly by a Title VI grant from U.S. department of Education’s International Education Programs Service (IEPS).

Although Yale’s concentration of Latin American research material is housed in Sterling Memorial Library, there are important collections housed in the Mudd Library. These materials are sometimes referred to as the "Latin American Country Collections." Apart from the Latin American Collection, numerous Latin American holdings are also found in the Economic Growth Center Collection, and the Divinity, Law, Social Science and Beinecke Libraries. Smaller collections are found in the Music, Art, Medical and Kline Science Libraries as well as the Peabody Museum, www.peabody.yale.edu. Social scientists have found the Economic Growth Center Collection to be invaluable in their research on the economic development of Latin America. Iberian Collection

The Yale Library's collections relating to Iberia comprise several hundred thousand volumes as well as newspapers, microfilms, electronic publications, films, maps and musical scores. The collections are particularly strong in literature and history. Works collected include all languages and literature of the peninsula, including Catalan, Gallegan, Basque, and even Bable. They cover the history of all regions and periods with strengths in medieval and Catalonian history and the period of European/Iberian expansion. Yale has one of the best collections in this country of current works on the literature and history of Portugal.
