Our mission is to run MATHCOUNTS programs in New Haven public middle schools. MATHCOUNTS is a program designed “to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States (MATHCOUNTS mission statement).” We use MATHCOUNTS problems to achieve three program goals.
1. MATHCOUNTS problems are correlated with the standard math curriculum. They reinforce concepts that students are learning in class and help students develop problem-solving skills. We want to complement and supplement students’ regular math classes by providing students with additional practice on selected topics, and exploring them in greater depth.
2. Many students in the New Haven Public Schools have limited access to enrichment opportunities in mathematics. The creative flavor of MATHCOUNTS problems shows that math is a dynamic, stimulating, and fun subject, and we hope that our program develops students’ interests in mathematics. We are especially interested in reaching students who may not yet have discovered their interest and talent in math.
3. We strive to have a broader impact on students that lasts beyond their MATHCOUNTS experiences. We hope that participation in MATHCOUNTS motivates students to put greater energy and effort into their math classes, and encourages them to continue their studies in math beyond the demands of required courses.
