On the Web

New Web Sites at the Yale Libraries

This month's On The Web column spotlights some new Web sites produced by librarians at Yale University. Besides the sites mentioned below, be sure to remember the Library's two central web sites: the Library home page and the Library Research Workstation.

For more information about any of these sites, please ask your local reference librarian.

Library Circulation Services on the Web

In a collaboration between Sterling Memorial Library and the Medical Library, electronic service forms have been developed and are available for several circulation services. The forms allow patrons to submit requests for such services as Eli Express, book renewals, holds and recalls through the World Wide Web. The services are being offered through a number of participating libraries, with further participants joining as libraries get connected with circulation e-mail addresses. The electronic service forms are available on the Yale Library Circulation home page.

Interlibrary Loan through the Web

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service which helps Yale readers access copies of books and journal articles not held at Yale. This service helps verify citations, locate other libraries who own the desired material, then arranges to retrieve a copy on the readers' behalf. The Library operates several interlibrary loan units across the campus, but now you can do it from your computer at home or wherever you access the World Wide Web.

Policies and electronic request forms are currently available for the Sterling Memorial Library and the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library interlibrary loan units. By Fall 1996, more ILL units will be ready for your web requests. Yale's Interlibrary Loan home page is located at: <http://www.library.yale.edu/ill/>

Internet Tutorials on the Web

If you didn't get a chance to attend one of the Library's many Internet workshops this spring, the online tutorials and exercises are available on the web. More Internet workshops will be offered over the summer and in the fall. Stop by the Reference Desk in Sterling Memorial Library for more information.

  1. Introduction to the World Wide Web covers the basics of the web and using Netscape, and includes some good sites for beginning to explore the Internet.
  2. Minerva/Pantheon: More than an Email Account introduces Lynx, the Web browser built into your pantheon account.
  3. Advanced Netscape for Macs and PCs shows you how to set up Netscape for some more sophisticated Web applications. This tutorial includes a brief introduction to HTML, the language used to create Web pages.
