SCHOLAR program

OVERVIEW

The Yale summer SCHOLAR program brings 50-60 students from Hill Regional Career High School (Career HS) to live and study science for three weeks on the Yale campus. SCHOLAR provides an intensive, hands-on science curriculum in an exploratory and interactive teaching environment that emphasizes discovery, critical thinking, and problem-solving.  Yale University faculty designs the curriculum with the support of teachers and advisors from Career HS, Yale graduate and professional schools, and SCHOLAR faculty.  Yale students serve a vital role as teaching assistants and mentors.

The SCHOLAR program grew from a formal partnership established in 1996 between Yale University and Career HS. The Yale-Career Partnership brought together the University’s health professions schools in medicine and nursing with a New Haven regional magnet high school.  Career HS is a science, business and computer science magnet school serving 720 students from New Haven and nearby school districts.

The SCHOLAR program began in 1998 with the primary goal of assisting motivated and academically promising Career HS students to prepare for success in college, especially in disciplines leading to careers in the health professions.  The program has grown in size while maintaining its original focus of science enrichment and college preparation. Participants are competitively selected from the Career HS freshman, sophomore, and junior classes.  Students who perform well in SCHOLAR and maintain good academic records are encouraged to return each summer.  Over 80% of SCHOLAR students return for at least one additional summer and nearly one-half return for three successive summers.   SCHOLAR summer program activities are further supported by year-round mentorship and science lectures organized by Yale University.

SCHOLAR students are challenged to work collaboratively in teams and small groups that use techniques adapted from problem-based learning theory and practice.  Students carry the shared experiences of their summer group work back to Career HS where  students form an informal and influential community of students with high standards for academic performance and strong college aspirations.

The SCHOLAR program has been highly successful.  All SCHOLAR students have attended college upon graduation from Career HS. Many have maintained their interest and focus in science and health professions.  SCHOLAR enjoys high visibility and credibility within Career HS among students, parents, teachers and administrators.  SCHOLAR students clearly value the linkages between Career HS and Yale that provide direct and meaningful access to educational resources and academic support.
