SCHOLAR Academic Program
After a thorough spring admissions process, 51 Hill Regional Career High School students were invited to participate in the fourteenth summer of SCHOLAR. This year's rigorous curriculum was designed around SCHOLAR's traditional goals of science enrichment and college preparation, with students in class six hours daily, Tuesday through Friday. Students spent three hours each morning studying science: sophomores studied neurobiology and microbial psychology; juniors studied chemistry; and seniors studied biotechnology and microbial ecology. In addition to the daily three-hour science curriculum, all students took afternoon humanities courses taught by instructors from Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School. This year, sophomores took a playwriting course, juniors took an archival/family history course, and seniors took a college essay course. To supplement their college essay course, seniors were led through several college preparation sessions in the evening. At the end of the program, seniors had completed one college essay and the Common Application, knew how to search for financial aid opportunities, and, in general, had a better understanding of the college application process.
