"A Huey P. Newton Story," a portrait of the late cofounder of the Black Panther Party, will be presented for one night only this month as part of the Yale Repertory Theatre Special Events Series.
Created and performed by Roger Guenveur Smith with live music by Marc Anthony Thompson, "A Huey P. Newton Story" will be presented at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, at the University Theatre, 222 York St.
Smith's solo performance, which is based on Newton's own writings and interviews with the Black Panther, uses a stream-of-consciousness technique to track the militant's rise and demise.
The New York Times praised "A Huey P. Newton Story" as "a performance that pairs superb theatrical artifice with genuinely harrowing emotional realism." The work garnered Obie Awards for Smith and Thompson, as well as two Drama Desk nominations, The Helen Hayes Award for Smith and three NAACP Awards, including Production of the Year in 1997.
Tickets for "A Huey P. Newton Story" are $22 for the general public, $18 for Yale Rep subscribers and $15 for students with I.D. For more information or to charge tickets by phone, call the Yale Rep box office at 432-1234.
