Series asks 'Whither Early Modern British History?'

"Whither Early Modern British History?" is the question that will be considered in a four-part series being sponsored by the history department this spring and next fall.

The featured speakers, all of whom are experts in early modern British history, will discuss how the field -- which was once simply called Tudor-Stuart or British history -- has been changing rapidly in recent years, particularly due to the increasing emphasis on England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland as separate entities.

Three of the lectures will be presented this spring. All are free and open to the public, and will take place at 4 p.m. in Rm. 211 of the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St. The dates, topics and speakers are:

Wednesday, March 25 -- "Remapping Early Modern England," Kevin Sharpe, professor of history, School of Research, University of Southampton, England.

Monday, April 6 -- "Early Modern Britain: Past and Present," Keith Wrightson, reader in English social history, University of Cambridge, England.

Thursday, April 16 -- "Early Modern Britain: Here, There and Everywhere," Robert Tittler, professor of history, Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The series will continue on Wednesday, Sept. 23, with a talk titled "The Liveliest Period of British and Irish History" by John Morrill, reader in early modern history and vice master of Selwyn College at the University of Cambridge. The time and location of this talk will be announced.
