Works by photographer featured in 'The Stone Walls of New England'

During colonial days, vast tracts of New England farmland were divided by stone walls. Photographs of the remnants of these rocky boundaries, which once criss-crossed the region like a net, are featured in an exhibition now on display in the lobby of the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC), 34 Park St.

Titled "The Stone Walls of New England," the show features 22 color photographs by Frank McAuliffe, who teaches photography at Paier College of Art in Hamden. The works were taken with a 4 x 5 view camera mounted on a tripod. "An instrument like that," says McAuliffe, "requires a more deliberate way of working, in some ways, it's not unlike a painter with a canvas." The images also require long exposure times, up to several minutes, says the photographer, adding that he is happy to return from his photographic forays having only shot a few frames, rather than rolls, of film.

"The Stone Walls of New England" will be on display through Thursday,
April 30. Visitors may view the exhibition weekdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free and the public is welcome.

The exhibit is part of the CMHC Foundation's ARTrageous project in which artists are invited to present their work for display in the lobby of the CMHC. Artists who wish to exhibit may submit a brief biography and two photographs of their work.

For more information, call Sandy G. Hotchkiss, administrative coordinator
of the ARTrageous project, at (203) 789-7407.
