Slifka show features artworks by mother and son

For the first time ever, the paintings of renowned contemporary artist Howard Fussiner will be displayed alongside the works of his mother, the late Sarah Fussiner, in an exhibit at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale.

"Fussiner: Son and Mother," which will be on view through June 20, features 29 paintings by Howard Fussiner and five by his mother. Included among the younger Fussiner's works are those depicting two of his favorite subjects: natural landscapes and the annual Fourth of July parade in Deer Isle, Maine.

Howard Fussiner has been the featured artist in at least 75 solo exhibitions, and his works appear in collections around the world. He has participated in countless shows and has won awards in every major art exhibition in New England. His colorful painting style shows the influence of the French artist Paul Cezanne on Fussiner's work, according to exhibit organizers.

Sarah Fussiner began painting in 1943, when her son joined the U.S. Army and left his oil paints behind. Shortly after the war's end, she entered a competitive exhibition at the American Contemporary Artists Gallery in Manhattan. Her work has since been displayed at the Jewish Community Center in New Haven and at the Bronx Museum of Art.

Commenting on the exhibit of works by mother and son, Howard Fussiner says, "It's a very good idea; I wonder why we hadn't thought of it earlier!"

Fussiner will speak at the opening reception for the exhibition, which will take place on Thursday, April 16, 5:30-7 p.m. at the Joseph Slifka Center, 80 Wall St. A gallery talk will be offered at the center on Sunday,
May 10 (Mother's Day) at 1:30 p.m. Both the exhibit and associated events are free and open to the public.

"Fussiner: Son and Mother" is sponsored by Yale Hillel and the Allan and Leah Rabinowitz Fund. For further information about the exhibit, call 432-1134.
