Art gallery concert will feature Elm City and suburban schoolchildren

A 35-voice boys choir from the Elm City will join with 51 fifth-graders from a suburban Connecticut school playing a range of brass instruments in a concert on Sunday, May 3, at 3 p.m. at the Yale University Art Gallery, 1111 Chapel St. The concert is free and open to the public.

The concert marks the first time that the Unity Boys Choir of New Haven and the Center School Band of East Hampton will perform together. The event has grown out of the urban/suburban arts program, in which teachers and students from New Haven schools share workshops at the Yale University Art Gallery with their counterparts at suburban and rural Connecticut schools.

The program includes special arrangements for the choir alone, as well as pieces for the band alone and joint performances. The Unity Boys Choir is composed of boys from eight New Haven public schools, and is conducted by Lillie E. Perkins. The members of the band, which is directed by Lois Sprague, all attend Center School.
