Physicians at the Yale Anxiety Disorders Research Clinic will offer free evaluation and treatment of anxiety disorders at two Connecticut health centers on Wednesday, May 6, as part of the National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day.
The screenings will take place 9 a.m.-
4 p.m. at Yale-New Haven Hospital, 20 York St., and 3-7 p.m. at Plexus Health Services, 350 Fairfield Ave. in Bridgeport. The satellite clinics will be led by Dr. Andrew Goddard, director of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic and associate professor of psychiatry at the School of Medicine.
The clinics will offer evaluation, biological testing and treatment free of charge for people in good health between the ages of 18 and 65 who have experienced panic attacks. Panic attacks are brief episodes of intense fear accompanied by symptoms such as a racing heart, shortness of breath and chills. It is estimated that more than three million Americans will have panic disorders at some time in their lives.
In addition to offering free testing and treatment, the clinics enable researchers from the School of Medicine and the West Haven campus of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System to study patients who normally would not have access to such treatment. Yale's Anxiety Disorders Clinic conducts studies to measure the effectiveness of medications to treat panic disorders and depression.
