Volunteers Needed for Habitat for Humanity bike tour

Several Yale-sponsored teams will be pedaling along the West Haven shoreline and beyond during a benefit bike tour sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of Greater New Haven, Inc. on Saturday, May 2.

This is the second bike tour sponsored by the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, an international nonprofit organization that works to eradicate poverty housing. The tour is officially sponsored by the Connecticut State Fraternal Order of Police. Yale and other community organizations are also supporting the event. All proceeds will fund the construction of Habitat homes in the Greater New Haven area.

Participants in the bike tour will pedal a 10-, 20- or 40-mile route along the shoreline and on rural roads, starting at Old Grove Park on Captain Thomas Boulevard in West Haven. All registered participants will receive a free T-shirt and nutritious snacks and beverages.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. for the 40-mile bike route; 8 a.m. for the 20-mile route; and 8:30 a.m. for the 10-mile route. Walkers have the option of taking a 1.5- or 3-mile route along West Haven's shoreline boardwalk. Registration for walkers begins at 8:30 a.m.

A "Women's Team" is being assembled by Daisy Rodríguez, assistant secretary for community relations in the Office of New Haven Affairs. Although the team will include riders of both sexes and all ages, it is so named because all pledge proceeds raised by the participants will go to the Habitat Women's Build Project. Anyone interested in joining this team can call 432-4488.

A "Yale Library Team" is being formed by library staff members César Rodríguez and William Massa. Pledge proceeds raised by these team members will go to the Habitat Collegiate Build project. To join, call 432-1835.

A third Yale team is being assembled by Andrew Collinson of the Office of New Haven Affairs, also to raise money for the Collegiate Build project. Many of the participants on this team are staff members of the Office of New Haven Affairs, but the team is open to all. To join, call Nancy Franco at 432-8623.

Coordinating the Habitat bike tour is Yale undergraduate Jim Garman '98 of Ezra Stiles College, who is enlisting the support of student participants. He can be reached at 436-0174.

Individuals are also welcome to participate independently. Registration is $20 for adults; $10 for students and children. Anyone who raises over $1,000 in contributions will receive a Cannondale bicycle.

A bus will be available from Yale to the starting site in West Haven. The bus will leave Old Campus at 8 a.m. For further information about the bike tour, call Habitat for Humanity at 785-0794.
