Symposium marks 200th anniversary of an historic New Haven cemetery

Former University President Howard R. Lamar will be among the current and former Yale community members who speak at a three-day celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Grove Street Cemetery. The event, sponsored by the Friends of the Grove Street Cemetery, will be held Friday-Sunday, May 1-3.

Highlighting the celebration will be a "Symposium of Speakers" featuring Lamar, Sterling Professor Emeritus of History; W. Jack Cunningham, professor emeritus of electrical engineering; Peter Dobkin Hall, acting director and research scientist in the Program on Non-Profit Organizations at the Institution for Social and Policy Studies; and Stanley Flink, former director of public affairs for the University. Among the other participants will be Robert Leeney, editor emeritus of the New Haven Register.

The symposium sessions will meet daily beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the New Haven Colony Historical Society, 114 Whitney Ave. There is a $25 registration fee for the sessions.

Other highlights of the celebration will include tours of the cemetery 2-3 p.m. on Friday and 3-4 p.m. on Saturday; and a dramatic performance by student actors representing nine famous persons interred in Grove Street Cemetery. All of these events are open to the public free of charge.

For further information about the event, call the Grove Street Cemetery office at (203) 787-1443.
