Yale faculty, students, staff and alumni will be among the more than 200 artists in the Greater New Haven area whose works will be featured in "Open Studios '98NH2000," a city-wide celebration being held Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17.
During the event, the public will be invited into artists' studios from noon to 5 p.m. each day. Maps showing the location of each studio are available in the Artspace Gallery, 70 Audubon St., which is currently hosting an exhibit that includes one work by each artist taking part in the celebration. Maps will also be published in the New Haven Advocate, the Fairfield Weekly and the Hartford Advocate on Wednesday, May 13. Free buses, provided by the Yale Bookstore, will circle the city, making stops at "Open Studios" locations, including the Peabody Museum of Natural History, upper Chapel Street, Broadway, Union Station and Artspace. Works of art will be for sale, including the pieces on display at Artspace.
"This is a way to celebrate the cultural richness of New Haven, and to invite the public to the intimate setting of a working studio," says Paul Collard, director of the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, which will be held Wednesday-Sunday, June 24-28. "Open Studios '98NH2000" is one of a series of events throughout Greater New Haven leading up to the international festival. Yale is a sponsor of both events.
The current and former students and faculty of the School of Art who will participate in "Open Studios '98NH2000" include Candida Alvarez, Jan Cunningham, Eileen Doktorski, John Gambell, Vanessa Glenn, Susana Jacobson, Jason Cuvelier, Scott Peterman, Sam Weiner and John Keefer.
Gambell, a faculty member in the School of Art's graphic design program, created the map that highlights studio locations and the bus route for the event.
Staff members of the Peabody Museum will also mount an exhibition of their art at the museum, located at 170 Whitney Ave. Participants will include Michael Anderson, John Maisano, Armand Morgan, Ava Orphanoudakis and Rosemary Volpe.
In addition, the Art & Architecture Gallery at 180 York St. will feature the thesis work of current M.F.A. photography students.
Workshops for youngsters ages 7-12 will be offered in conjunction with "Open Studios" at the Eli Whitney Museum, 917 Whitney Ave. in Hamden. There is a $5 fee for the workshops, which will be held noon-5 p.m. both days of the event. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling the museum at (203) 777-1833.
