Rogers Smith, professor of political science, has been selected as one of three finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in History for his recent book "Civic Ideals: Conflicting Visions of Citizenship in U.S. Public Law."
"Civic Ideals," published by Yale University Press, is a critical study of the history and ethics of American citizenship law. In the work, Smith demonstrates the ways in which racism, nativism and sexism have continually undermined the democratic potential of civil legal thought, and he argues for the urgency of a new politics of citizenship.
Library Journal called the book "an excellent chronology of the people, parties, movements and developments in this often ignored area of American legal history."
Smith is also the author of "Liberalism and American Constitutional Law" and is coauthor of "Citizenship Without Consent: The Illegal Alien in the American Polity." He is actively involved in local race and immigration reform initiatives.
