The Japanese government has an-nounced that Edwin McClellan, the Sumitomo Professor of Japanese Studies and director of graduate studies in East Asian languages and literatures, has been selected to receive one of its high-ranking imperial decorations, the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.
The decoration honors McClellan's longtime contribution in promoting Japanese literature and deepening the understanding of Japan in the United States. McClellan will be decorated by the newly appointed Consul General of Japan in Boston on June 4.
McClellan is considered one of the leading scholars of Japanese literature in the United States. He has translated into English works by Japanese authors such as Soseki Natsume and Naoya Shiga, and published books and articles about Japanese literature. His translation of Natsume's novel "Kokoro" is credited with raising the level of Japanese studies in the United States.
McClellan received the Kikuchi Kan Prize in 1994 for his contributions as a scholar and teacher of Japanese literature in the United States and the Noma Literary Translation Prize in 1995 for his translation of Eiji Yoshikawa's memoir "Fragments of a Past."
