Obituary: Setrag Zacarian, pioneer in cryosurgery

Setrag Aram Zacarian, a former member of the faculty at the School of Medicine who was a pioneer in the study of cryosurgery, died on April 16 at his home in Truro, Massachusetts. He was 76 years old.

Zacarian taught in the dermatology departments at the medical schools at Tufts, Boston and Yale universities and at the Albany College of Medicine. He retired from teaching last year after spending 41 years in medical practice. During his career, he received international recognition and numerous local and international awards, including the American Medical Association's Physicians Recognition Award and a Presidential Citation from the American College of Cryosurgery for Pioneering Achievement and Outstanding Leadership in Research in the Use of Cryosurgery in Medicine. He authored over 116 books and articles in his field, and served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Cryosurgery, Journal of Comprehensive Therapy, Journal of Dermatological Surgery and Oncology, and the Journal of Cryobiology.

Zacarian is survived by his wife, Aroxy (Ovian) Zacarian; four children, Christine Johanson of North Andover, Massachusetts, Matthew Zacarian of Amherst, Massachusetts, Carolyn Zacarian of Clayton, Missouri, and Elizabeth Nadfeldt of South Orange, New Jersey; a sister, Dr. A. Diana Zacarian of Boston; and nine grandchildren.
