Commencement Information

Yale University will hold its 297th Commencement ceremony on Monday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. on the Old Campus. No tickets are required, and the ceremony will take place outdoors even if it rains.

The following is presented for the general information of the Yale community. For more details, visit the Commencement website at www.yale.edu/secretary/commencement, or listen to the recorded message of events for Saturday-Monday, May 23-25, at 432-2310.

Baccalaureate Address

Baccalaureate services are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 24, in Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets. President Richard C. Levin will speak at both services, and the programs are identical.

Seniors and their guests from the following residential colleges should attend the 10 a.m. service: Calhoun, Timothy Dwight, Morse, Pierson, Saybrook and Ezra Stiles. Seniors and their guests from the following colleges should attend the 11:30 a.m. service: Berkeley, Branford, Davenport, Jonathan Edwards, Silliman and Trumbull. Graduate students and their guests, as well as other members of the Yale community, may attend either service. No tickets are required.

Commencement Day

On Commencement morning, undergraduates assemble in their college courtyards and, under the direction of faculty marshals, march to Cross Campus to form a line of procession. There, they will be joined by degree candidates from the graduate and professional schools for the procession to Old Campus.

Parents and guests should be seated on Old Campus no later than 10:15 a.m. There is no reserved seating, and the ceremony will be held rain or shine, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

During Commencement, symbolic diplomas are presented to student marshals representing degree candidates from Yale College and the graduate and professional schools. After the Old Campus ceremony, undergraduates follow faculty marshals back to their residential colleges, where individual diplomas are awarded. Buffet luncheons in the residential college dining halls follow the diploma ceremonies. Information about the post-Commencement ceremonies for graduate and professional students is listed below.

Members of the Faculty

There are two faculty sections at ground level in front of the Commencement platform; no seats in this section are reserved. All who plan to sit there are requested to be in academic dress.

Graduate and Professional Schools' Degree Ceremonies

Schools of Art and Architecture: The two schools will hold a joint degree ceremony in Weir courtyard (the sculpture garden of the Yale University Art Gallery), 66 High St. Following the ceremony, the School of Architecture will hold a lunch for students and their guests in Weir courtyard, and the School of Art will host a lunch in the A&A Gallery, Hastings Hall, 180 York St. In case of rain, the joint degree ceremony will be held in the Yale Art Gallery lecture hall (entrance on High Street), and the School of Architecture luncheon will take place in the gallery's sculpture hall.

Divinity School: On May 24 at 4 p.m., there will be a Baccalaureate service in the Sterling Quadrangle, 409 Prospect St. Margaret Farley, the Stark Professor of Christian Ethics, will speak. On May 25, there will be a degree ceremony in the Sterling Divinity Quadrangle, followed by a reception and luncheon in the refectory and common room.

School of Drama: There will be a degree ceremony in the University Theatre, 222 York St., and a reception afterward in the Yale Cabaret, 217 Park St.

Department of Epidemiology and Public Health: A degree ceremony and reception will be held on the lawn of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Public Health, 60 College St.

School of Forestry and Environmental Studies: A degree ceremony and reception will be held on the lawn of Marsh Hall, 360 Prospect St.

Graduate School of Arts and Sciences: On May 24, there will be an open house 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the McDougal Graduate Student Center in the Hall of Graduate Studies (HGS), 320 York St. Also that day, there will be a convocation at 3:30 p.m. followed by a reception at 3:45 p.m. in the HGS courtyard. The featured speaker will be Yale trustee Jaime Serra '79 Ph.D., Mexico's minister of Commerce. (See related story, page 1.) On May 25, there will be a presentation of Ph.D. degrees in Woolsey Hall, followed by a reception in the HGS courtyard.

Law School: The degree ceremony will be held in the Law School courtyard, 127 Wall St. Following the ceremony, students and their guests can purchase lunch in the Law School dining hall.

School of Management: A degree ceremony will be held in Culkins courtyard, 135 Prospect St., followed by a luncheon in Donaldson Commons, 15 Mansfield St. The featured speaker will be Richard A. Grasso, chair and chief executive officer of the New York Stock Exchange.

School of Medicine: A degree ceremony and luncheon will be held in the courtyard of Edward S. Harkness Hall, 367 Cedar St.

School of Music: On May 24, there will be a free Commencement concert featuring graduate students from the school at 4 p.m. in Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall, 470 College St. On May 25, there will be a degree ceremony in Morse Recital Hall, followed by a reception at the Center Church Parish House, 311 Temple St.

School of Nursing: A degree ceremony will be held at Prince Street Park, corner of Cedar and Prince streets, followed by a reception at the School of Nursing, located at 100 Church St. South.

Yale Center for International and Area Studies: A degree ceremony for students who are Master of Arts degree candidates in African studies, East Asian studies, international relations, Russian and East European studies, and international development economics will be held on the front lawn of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave. Immediately following, there will be a reception in the Luce Hall common room. In the case of rain, the degree ceremony will be held in the Luce Hall auditorium, where seating will be limited and guests will be admitted by ticket.
