International Festival of Arts & Ideas

Featuring performers from around the world as well as local talent, the International Festival of Arts & Ideas is one of the largest celebrations of art and culture in the United States. This year’s festival features theater, dance, music, family performances, community events and a series of discussions, debates and seminars hosted by leading thinkers, writers and speakers. The various programs and events are woven together by the festival’s themes this year of personal liberty, social responsibility and spirituality. Other offerings include tours of local venues and scenery on foot and by bicycle. Many of the events take place on the Yale campus. This year’s highlights include events in conjunction with “The Big Read” (public readings and discussion of Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” over several months), and the U.S. premieres of two theatrical productions originating from Irish and English stages: “The Burial at Thebes,” a new translation of Sophocles’ “Antigone” by Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney and the Fishamble Theater Company’s production of Sebastian Barry’s “The Pride of Parnell Street.” More information about the festival will appear in the June 13 issue of the Yale Bulletin & Calendar.


Music on the Green

Renowned musicians will perform on the New Haven Green on four consecutive Saturday evenings during July and August. Concerts will begin at 6 p.m. and are free. The performers are yet to be announced. The dates for the concerts are July 12, 19 and 26, and Aug. 2.


“Celebrate July 4th”

The City of New Haven’s annual Independence Day celebration and fireworks display takes place on the waterfront.


Bicycle Festival

East Rock Park

Date: Saturday, July 19

The festival will feature a bicycle jamboree, carousel, live performances and more. An individual time trial hill climb will take place at 10 a.m.


Jazz Festival

New Haven Green

Date: Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9 and 10

Jazz Haven presents this festival featuring noted jazz musicians on the New Haven Green. Performers to be announced.


Chapel Street Historic District Sidewalk Sale

Date: Saturday and Sunday, June 14 & 15

Time: noon-5 p.m.


Enjoy the sales at stores in the district that includes Chapel, College, High and York streets.


Arts on the Edge Festival

Audubon Street

Date: Saturday, June 7 (rain or shine)

This festival features music, dancing and hands-on activities to entertain the entire family.


“See What’s New” on Broadway

Live music, free activities and events will be offered as visitors explore the shops and restaurants of the Broadway District, which includes Broadway, York and Elm streets.


1st Thursdays in the Chapel Historic District

On the first Thursday of every month, the Chapel Street Historic District in New Haven hosts a downtown celebration with street performers, in-store events, promotions and more. Stores stay open until 8 p.m. and restaurants even later.


Shakespeare in the Park

Yale is a supporter of the Elm Shakespeare Company’s annual “Shakespeare in the Park” summer productions. This year, the Elm Shakespeare Company will present two shows in rotating repertory (with alternating performances): William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and Thornton Wilder’s “The Matchmaker.” “The Matchmaker” will be staged Aug. 7-10, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30. “Hamlet” will be staged Aug. 14-17, 19, 21, 23, 27, 29 and 31. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.

The Elm Shakespeare Company is a professional theater company committed to establishing a discourse with Connecticut’s communities and schools through the medium of Shakespeare’s plays.
