International Conference: General Ideas About Conflict (based on Columbia’s new “Slippery Steps” Model

·There should be less emphasis on us lecturing the kids, or imposing our own vocabulary for conflict (i.e., “escalator”).Instead, we should really emphasize them generating their own vocab, and their own ideas, trying to come up with everything themselves. It should be based on their personal experiences and insights.

·Emphasize the actual emotional process of conflict: why do people lose control? These kids already know about the basic things that cause conflict & make it better…the problem is HOW to make yourself able to do these things that you know you’re supposed to do…what to do in certain situations?

·Emphasize the students’ CHOICE at every step: you can choose to make conflict go a certain way: it isn’t out of control!

·Emphasize that conflicts are not always bad

·Make sure the kids are really THINKING
