Currently my work examines the puzzle of the persistence of subnational
regions with authoritarian characteristics in democratic countries.
In countries as diverse as India, Brazil, Philippines, Mexico, the
United Stated during the Jim Crow era and Argentina among others,
regimes with authoritarian characteristics successfully maintain control
over subnational units despite national democratization. Thus, persistent
subnational authoritarian enclaves result in co-nationals with distinct
political rights a strong normative reason to worry about political
" regimes" in units smaller than the nation. Often these
low democracy regions in which authoritarian practices remain are
governed by a different faction than the democratic polity’s national
government. I propose a political explanation for the persistence
of subnational regions that retain authoritarian characteristics .
