Professional Interests:
My research interests are focused on the application of an ecological approach to the study and treatment of serious mental illness, trauma, and addiction, particularly in underserved and understudied populations. Recently, I have undertaken investigations concerned with environmental predictors of mental illness in women with childhood abuse histories, the relationship of cultural factors to mental health and substance use in Latinas, and assets and barriers to effective clinical care and recovery among those impacted by racial and ethnic health disparities. In the hope of meaningfully influencing public policy and practice, my work also involves collaborating with larger systems of care, program evaluation, and consulting to the community. For example, I have conducted evaluations of community-based services concerned with mental health, substance abuse, health disparities, youth violence prevention, and the organization and effectiveness of continuums of care. I also consult with a variety of service delivery agencies concerning recovery-oriented practices including culturally competent and person-centered care, health disparities, and motivational interviewing. Underscoring all of my work is a commitment to improving the behavioral health service delivery system and the prospects for recovery and community living for individuals with mental illness.
