Commissioner Kirk on PCP

DMHAS Commissioner, Dr. Thomas A. Kirk, Jr., stated “Person-centered care is at the core of our Statewide Recovery Initiative for persons with psychiatric disabilities and/or substance use disorders. In order for a person to recover and improve their health it is essential for them to learn to manage their illness.  Perhaps, more important, they should be helped to rediscover their strengths and assets such that they have renewed hope, more resilience in responding to problems, and greater quality of life.  This can be accomplished despite their serious illness. The ‘person-centered care’ project will become an important tool for learning new sets of culturally specific recovery strategies.  These strategies are the latest step in a major re-shaping of our entire system of private non-profit and state operated services for everyone we serve.”

Kirk added: “This grant award recognizes the vision and skills of people working to improve Connecticut’s behavioral healthcare system. The system is based upon collaboration among state operated and private nonprofit staff, academic partners and persons in recovery.  They are resolute in their conviction to help people to recover their lives rather than accepting a lifetime of disability and dependence.”
