The Faculty of Arts and Sciences is divided into departments, each with the capacity to propose its own appointments and with its own chair appointed by the Corporation on nomination by the President after consultation with the deans and faculty, for a term normally of three years. In addition, there are several interdisciplinary departments, programs, and centers (e.g., the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies) with specified powers of appointment.
