Length of time in rank for term appointments is determined in part by the availability of resources and may be shorter than the standard three years for assistant professors. The cumulative total of all term appointments for faculty in the Traditional Track may not exceed ten years. The School of Nursing follows University policy regarding part-time appointments, with the exception that part-time appointments at the School of Nursing may be less than 50% time. (See Section III.I .) 1. Faculty Not Assigned to Track Appointments Assistant Professor. The initial term in rank for an assistant professor is normally not less than three years and may not exceed five years. This rank is renewable for one additional term. No person may serve in the role of assistant professor at Yale for more than seven years, except for the extensions provided in Section III.F . The seven-year maximum also includes leaves (paid or unpaid), granted for professional purposes. 2. Traditional Track Appointments Associate Professor. Initial appointment to the rank of associate professor is normally for a period of three years and may be up to a period of five years. There may be only one reappointment, and no person may serve in the rank of associate professor on term at Yale for more than seven years, except for the extensions provided in Section III.F . 3. Clinical Track Appointments a. Associate Professor. Appointments may be made for terms not to exceed five years and may be renewed with no limit on the number of terms. Persons at these ranks are considered full-time faculty. b. Professor. The initial appointment and any subsequent reappointments may be made for terms not to exceed five years and may be renewed with no limit on the number of terms.
