The benefits described in this section are those currently offered and may be changed from time to time by the University. The terms of each benefit are governed by its respective plan documents. This handbook provides only a general description of the benefits. Detailed information may be obtained from the Benefits Office either in person or on the Web. Members of the faculty who are eligible for benefits are urged to participate in them. Members of the faculty are automatically enrolled in the Yale University Retirement Account Plan (YURAP). Application should be made at the time of appointment. Any required premium payment is made through the payroll system. It is the responsibility of the individual to initiate application for most of these benefits, even when participation is automatic. Many require choices among alternatives or levels of participation. Yale has no obligation to assume responsibility for benefits lost through failure to apply for participation, or to make a retroactive contribution to a benefit for a period prior to the time of application by an eligible faculty member.
