Public competitions

Seeds of Healthy Change invited ordinary people to do extraordinary things. We held an open competition inviting entrants to create works of art that raise awareness of weight stigma; develop healthy, kid-friendly school lunches; and devise ways for schools to raise money without resorting to selling unhealthy products. Entries came in from coast to coast. The winners were fabulous, from a touching song [hear here], to irresistible peanut butter raspberry sandwiches, to a nursery school’s drive to protect families’ health and the environment by selling energy-efficient light bulbs instead of candy bars. The best part about Seeds of Healthy Change was that it opened people’s eyes to the possibility of rethinking old, unhealthy habits. The cliché turned out to be true: Everyone who entered was a winner.

We are continuing in the vein of reaching out to ordinary people and celebrating their extraordinary accomplishments through Champions for Change. USA Today is partnering with us in this program to tell the stories of people changing the food environments in their communities.
