Our website, a reliable and accessible source of information on food issues, continues to evolve to enhance its content and its ability to build an on-line community committed to change. Carly Keidel redesigned the homepage and added new resources, including extensive information on healthy eating and a section on the economics of food policy and obesity. Users clearly appreciate the added features. In year one, we had 460,000 hits from 60 countries. In year two, we had more than 3.9 million hits from 120 countries. The Rudd Center website’s honors include being singled out by Dorland’s Healthcare Website Guide as one of the top web resources on obesity. The Center also produced eatbroccoli.org, a website promoting the nutritionally rich vegetable. With the launch of our blog, Rudd Sound Bites, we created a forum for lively discussion of food issues. The blog has received millions of hits while attracting new authors eager to participate. Rudd Sound Bites was ranked the third most popular obesity website by Del.icio.us, a social bookmarking web service. The blog has also received positive press from Science Magazine, Typepad, Zane and the internal Yale media. The blogosphere has been abuzz about Rudd Sound Bites with praise like this from April Smith at mprize.org: Yesterday I discovered the Rudd Sound Bites blog … I came across the blog and figured I’d check out just a few entries. Over an hour later I was still glued to the screen. The 1,250 subscribers to our monthly newsletter were treated to a more sophisticated look when we changed from a pdf to web-based email format. We continue to grow through podcasting. Still in development, these audio pieces will offer people a novel way to learn about food issues. |
