Rudd Center annual report 2006

Gathering the troops

We realize, of course, that the Rudd Center is not the only organization concerned with weight stigma. Our role involves gathering all the players from various fields with diverse expertise to address the problem in a concerted way. We hosted the first-ever Action Summit on Weight Stigma at the Rudd Center in September. Physicians, children’s advocates, media personalities and lawyers gathered together for a robust exchange of ideas and strategies. The summit was unique in its emphasis on action, leaving each participant with concrete steps to take toward the elimination of bias.

The Rudd Center is becoming an important resource for others who are combating weight stigma. For example, the New York City Department of Health asked us to help them integrate sensitivity training into their obesity prevention and management guidelines, which will go to 30,000 physicians in the city. The Obesity Society uses our PowerPoint presentations [1 2] to educate health professionals. We are currently developing anti-bias toolkits that Kaiser Permanente proposes to use throughout its 8.4 million member network. Through partnership and consultation, we extend our reach and our ability to fight weight bias.

The spirited discussions of weight bias on the Rudd Center blog [1 2 3 4] indicate that there is strong public sentiment on this issue waiting for an outlet. The Rudd Center is poised to lead and shape that debate.
