Summer Cooperative African Language Institute (1999)
Foreign Language Area
Studies (FLAS) Fellowships
Summer 1999
General Application Information
Department of Education regulated eligibility for FLAS fellowships is as follows:
"Graduate Students who are U.S. citizens or nationals or permanent residents and who are accepted for enrollment in or enrolled in a program that combines modern foreign language training with international or area studies or with the international aspects of professional or other fields of study."
FLAS fellowship support for summer intensive courses in 1999 is available for most languages with some exceptions. Any candidate meeting the elibility requirements above can apply to any university for any language, but individual universities may have different priorities in evaluating fellowship applications. A typical ordering of priorities would be:
- Current students of a university who will study a language offered by that univerisity, e.g. a Yale student who applies to Yale to study Wolof I at Yale.
- Current students of a university who will study a language offered by another university, e.g. a Yale student who applies to Yale to study Shona at Michigan State.
- Students of another university who will study a language offered by the university to which application is made, e.g. a UC-Berkeley student who applies to Yale to study Wolof I at Yale.
- Students of another university who will study a language not offered by the university to which application is made, e.g. a UC-Berkeley student who applies to Yale to study Shona at Michigan State.
Students may apply to more than one university, but they must obtain application materials and meet the deadlines of each of the universities to which they apply.
