Matt is interested in problems related to political order and state formation,with an emphasis on the cultural and institutional dimensions of states. His dissertation examines the relationship between systems of classification and state coercive power through a comparative analysis of English efforts to stamp out piracy in their maritime empire around the turn of the 18th century.
