Once upon a time, in the midst of the cold New Haven winter in 1977, a Yale undergraduate named Lori-Ann Wynter convened the first rehearsal of what would soon become the newest all-female a cappella group on campus. Three months later, still nameless, but well-rehearsed, the founding members of our group strode onto the stage at the now-obsolete Zeta Psi Jamboree, clad in matching tuxedos. The emcee, unprepared for the shocking spectacle, had to improvise:
"And to conclude the night, here's a little something extra!" Women's a cappella at Yale has never looked back.
Today, Something Extra lives up to the trailblazing legacy of the founding members. Though the tuxedos have given way to stylish black evening gowns and long red gloves, the dynamic sound that those ladies brought to Yale in 1977 lives on in our varied repertoire, our polished tone, and our irrepressible love of music. Our excellence in music has earned us recognition from the Collegiate A Cappella Society of America (CASA), as well as praise from audiences.
ToursWhenever we can, we take our show on the road. Something Extra has traveled the globe, from the
Midwest to
Mexico, from
Germany to
Jamaica, from
Paris to
Puerto Rico, and from the
White House to
Wakiki. We have performed for
Presidents of Yale and of the United States, for kindergarteners and senior citizens, for foreign diplomats and passersby in the street.
Last year took us to historical
Philadelphia for winter tour, and to sunny
Texas in the spring. The year before, we traveled to beachy Tampa, Florida and the roaring cities of NYC and Washington, DC.
Here at Yale... We perform throughout the academic year, including our annual Jam in February and our Parents Weekend concert in October, both of which draw crowds of friends, relatives, and music-lovers. In and around New Haven, we perform for some of our favorite audiences in schools, retirement communities, and country clubs. We also have a
fantastic time doing informal concerts with singing groups from other universities, like Stanford's Fleet Street Singers.
A big part of what makes Something Extra so special is the remarkable
diversity of interests and backgrounds within the group. We major in everything from geology to religious studies, and do everything from varsity sports to theatre to Yale Political Union, but no matter where our divergent paths take us, we share the
common bond of the music we make together.
