Formerly called Students for Corporate Responsibility, we are part of the national network called STARC, the Student Alliance to Reform Corporations. We are a grassroots student movement seeking to stop corporations' abuses of power, and to make corporations more socially and environmentally responsible. The alliance has grown out of the efforts of independent socially responsible investment movements at universities across the country.
In the past we have held a teach-in about the World Trade Organization, hosted the founding conference for STARC nationally, sent members to the pro-democracy/anti-corporate-globalization protests in Seattle, organized a busload and a few cars worth of people to protest for debt cancellation at the IMF/World Bank meeting in DC in April of 2000, successfully campaigned to get STARBUCKS to sell Fair Trade certified coffee, pushed Yale's investments committee to hold open meetings to listen to the concerns of the Yale community about socially injurious companies and corporate practices, and worked with Dwight Hall to move assets into a socially responsible mutual fund.
We are currently campaigning to adopt a set of social responsibility
guidelines at Yale, working with the investments committee to provide
public input and push for greater transparency, and mobilizing to oppose
the expansion of NAFTA and its extension to the rest of the continent in
the form of the
Free Trade Area of the Americas
(FTAA).
