Airline Pricing: How to get the lowest fare
Why does one person pay $404 and another pay up to
$1,719 for the same flight from New York to Los Angeles?
To receive the lowest fares, the traveler must be
willing to stay over a Saturday night and purchase a non-refundable
ticket with an advance purchase.
Pricing information, which is directly connected to
the airline, is the same for every travel agency. At Yale Travel
and the Medical Center branch, we have special discounts to pass
onto the traveler that are not offered by any other travel agency
or by calling directly to the airline. The savings go directly to
the traveler and department.
When evaluating whether or not to stay a Saturday
night, take into account the extra charges with doing so. For example:
hotel, meals, and car rental charges.
- The $404 fare was a 21 day advance with a
Saturday night stay.
- The $758 fare was a 7 day advance with a
Saturday night stay.
- The $1,079 fare was mid-week travel no Saturday
night stay, refundable.
