Individual traveler

Before leaving on your trip abroad, you should:

  1. Familiarize yourself with your destination. Resources include:
  2. Make an appointment with the Travel Clinic.
  3. Understand how your health insurance will respond while you are abroad.
    • Do you have coverage for routine care?
    • Are there higher copayments?
    • Is there prescription coverage?
    • Are there excluded activities or geographic areas?
    • Obtain additional coverage if needed.
  4. Update your passport if necessary.
  5. Apply for a visa, if required.
  6. Yale College students must sign travel waiver.
  7. Attend Program Pre-Trip Orientation.
  8. Register your travel, provide emergency contact information to, and leave a copy of your passport/visa with your Faculty Leader, Trip Sponsor, or Student Organization.
  9. Get a copy of your MEDEX ID card & Description Guide. Keep your MEDEX card in your wallet or passport in the event of an emergency.
  10. Understand what to do in an emergency.
  11. Carry a Global cell phone or at least a pre-paid phone card if traveling internationally.
  12. Be familiar with the University’s polices and procedures regarding conduct and travel.

Upon arrival in your host country, you should:

  1. Attend any orientation upon arrival in country.
  2. Register with the local U.S. Embassy or consular service.
  3. Stay in regular contact with adviser, colleagues, friends.
