With the money we had raised through a benefit concert, we had enough finances to renovate that room and leave enough supplies for the mom to fix another. We scraped off layers of paint from the '50's and earlier. Then we closed all of the holes in the walls and spackled the whole room. We repainted the walls and made it into a children's room, allowing the kids to paint little murals. The older children were kept home from school because there was a flu outbreak, and they were so eager to help us. They sandpapered along side us constantly wanted attention. When some of us weren't working, we played with the kids and taught them songs in English. They taught us songs in Latvian. We put down a new linoleum floor.
Dace Starka cried when we left, because she said that we were angels sent down from heaven to help her.
On the last day of service work we visited an orphanage, and spent the last two days visiting Riga, the capital.
