John Balaban
Professor of English and Poet-in-Residence
North Carolina State University

While visiting Yale as part of the Council on Southeast Asia Studies  Seminar Series, Professor Balaban read from his Spring Essence: The Poetry of Ho Xuan Huong (Copper Canyon Press, 2000). Spring Essence is the first book of her translations to appear in English, as well as in modern Vietnamese and the old, calligraphic script called Nôm. Below are pictures from his guest lecture in the Vietnamese 220 course as well as from dinner at Thai Taste. He was also accompanied by  the computational linguist Ngô Thanh Nhàn, one of the few Nôm scholars in the world.
