Editor's Note

This issue of WAKE disturbs us for several reasons. Foremost among these is the mind-bogglingly early date at which we have completed production. This unease is only agitated by a disproportionate number of topical similarities in this issue: gesticulating auteurs; aesthetics of the ill; the Washington D.C. Western a.k.a. Firestorm along Bush-Creek Ridge; urban revelry and loneliness; and, of course (because our staff is predominantly comprised of Literature majors), relationships of commerce and the artistic commodity. Our articles span a variety of genres, from Alejandra Cepeda O'Leary's wry reportage to A. Brenner's positively baroque ruminations on the fop. However, we have noticed a startling lacuna, namely the hip-hop genre. We must therefore use this opportunity to offer certain shout-outs:

Yo! Yo! To all the dope scholars who represented and dropped some science at Double Visions: Taiwan's New Cinema, Here and There Conference (Oct. 30-Nov. 2, 2003)! We were so stoked to be involved and help coordinate this blingin' event that featured such homies as Fredric Jameson, Ang Lee, Jonathan Rosenbaum and Chen Kuo-fu. Dig this! Most righteous props indubitably to the madcap professors of the Film Studies Department: James Tweedie, Dudley Andrew, and the inimitable and enduring Michael Kerbel!
