Google Search Appliance
Yale University uses the Google Search Appliance to power our local campus web searches of publically visible web pages at Yale. The Google Search Appliance (GSA) uses much of the same technology as the public Google search engine, however, the GSA does not search and index image files, as in Google Images.
Yale's search service indexes these types of web content:
- Any Yale web page that is visible to the general Internet. If you have web content that you do not want to be visible to the general public, please contact the Yale Webmaster for advice.
- Web pages within Yale's web domain, "yale.edu." If you have an official University web site that lies outside of our "yale.edu" web domain and you believe that we should include your site on our Yale search index, please contact us.
- Yale's search service can index and search for the text within most common types of files, including HTML and text files, Microsoft Office files like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, and Adobe Acrobat PDF files.
How to let us know about your new website
Please contact the University Webmaster if you have created a new website, particularly if you have also set up a new web server to host the site, to be sure that your site is covered in our list of sites to index for Yale search.
Sites powered by YaleSites will be automatically scanned and indexed for Yale search within about 48 hours, unless you have chosen to exclude your site from search.
Eligibility
Any public website created by a Yale community member and within Yale's "yale.edu" web domain is eligible for search indexing. The only exceptions are some kinds of student personal or academic web sites, which we exclude for privacy reasons.
