Scott Strobel

Vice President for West Campus Planning and Program Development

Scott Strobel joined the Yale faculty in 1995 in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry (MB&B) where he served as department chair from 2006-2009. Professor Strobel has been honored with numerous awards since arriving at Yale, including the Schering Plough Research Institute Award from the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2008. Last year Scott was named a National Security Science and Engineering Faculty Fellow by the Office of Naval Research. In 2006 and again in 2010, Professor Strobel was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Professor to promote efforts in undergraduate science education. With this award he instituted a program to explore microbial and chemical diversity in the world’s rainforests as a means to inspire undergraduate students in the sciences.

He is well-respected by Yale students: in 2004, he was awarded the Dylan Hixon Prize for Teaching Excellence in the Natural Sciences, and in 2007 he received the Graduate Mentoring Award in the Sciences. In 2009, Yale College seniors elected him Honorary Member of the Alpha of Connecticut Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Scott received his BA summa cum laude in Biochemistry from Brigham Young University. He completed his Ph.D. as an HHMI predoctoral fellow at California Institute of Technology; Peter Dervan ’72 Ph.D., a Trustee of the Yale Corporation, served as his thesis advisor. Thomas Cech, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, was his research advisor for his Postdoctoral Studies at the University of Colorado. Scott’s current research explores the chemical basis of RNA function and catalysis and hydrocarbon production by endophytic fungi.
