WISAY Social and Networking Event - "Champagne on the Green"

Women graduate students and post-docs interacted by joining WISAY for this inaugural social event. Cheese with crackers, fruit, Champagne and sparkling water were serverd.

An open forum discussion and reception with Professor Tamar Schlick and several of her students from NYU. She is a mathematician by training whose pioneering work includes the development new algorithms and computational methods for modeling fundamental biological processes at the molecular level. Building a theoretical framework for understanding the complex functions of biomolecules has required drawing from the expertise of her diverse research group made up of chemists, mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists and biologists.
Professor Schlick is the author of about 120 publications and a textbook on molecular modeling simulation. She is also committed to promoting and mentoring women in science, particularly though her organization, "Women on Women" at NYU.

Panel Participants: Dr. Andrew Hamilton, Provost of Yale University; Mark Simone, Development Recruiting Manager, Pfizer Inc. and Hillery Hunter, Researcher (RSM), IBM.

Dr. Erica Dawson, from Yale School of Management, gave a lecture on the basics of negotiation followed by an interactive session used to envision different scenarios and role-playing communication options. Job negotiators often get tripped up on how to word their requests, walking that line between assertive and demanding, and suggestions were explored on how to be assertive without being demanding.

Dr. Traci Hall, Investigator at National Institutes of Health

Dr. Hall has a BS in Biochemistry from UCLA, PhD from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, did a two-year fellowship with the US Agency for International Development as a AAAS Diplomacy fellow, postdoc with Dan Leahy at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She is a Senior Investigator at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, an institute of the NIH. She has been married for 11.5 years and the mother of an 8-year-old daughter and an almost 4-year-old son.

After a short presentation on various statistics regarding women in science, two Yale Daily News articles were discussed in light of the remarks by Harvard President Lawrence Summers on the position of women in science and engineering.

5 pm - hors d'oeuvres5:15 - Dr. Cheryl Hayward spoke about "From the Bench to the Desk: A Personal Experience at Pfizer".

Dr. Hayward got her PhD in organic chemistry from Yale University in 1994 working on the total synthesis of Rapamycin with Professor Sam Danishefsky. She went to Pfizer directly afterward where she has been for the past 11 years. She has experience working as a chemistry lab head in the atherosclerosis group and was then promoted to the management line in 1999. She is currently a Director with responsibility for the atherosclerosis chemistry team. She is married and has two daughters.

Dr. Meg Urry, Professor of Physics and Director of the Yale Center for Astronomy & Astrophysics and Astronomy
Dr. Urry has been very involved in Women in Science Programs at a National level. She will be speaking about why she feels that the mentoring process is so valuable. Following her speech we will discuss our mentoring program in more detail and give mentors and mentees the chance to fill out surveys to match mentors with mentees.
