Application Process
Tips for a Successful Fellowship ApplicationFollow instructions carefully. Apply for a grant that fits the project. Propose a project or study for which you are adequately prepared. Obtain strong recommendations that are tailored to the award (no generic letters). Submit well presented materials (i.e., proofread carefully): no typos, misspellings, etc. Choose appropriate recommenders (generally faculty who have taught you and know you well) Ask for recommendations with as much advance notice as possible, thereby allowing enough time for strong letters. Provide your recommenders with an updated resume, drafts of your fellowship essay(s), and general information on the award. Draft the application early to allow time to consult advisers (faculty for critique of proposal content; fellowship advisers for detailed information on the award and application tips). |
Submit the application on time.
Research the donor or funding organization if you are selected for an interview.
Prepare for national interviews by reading the online interview reports from past finalists and winners; speak with previous winners if possible; request a practice interview through your college.
What is out of your control?
1. Foundation/agency/country politics, preferences.
2. Mandates to funding agencies regarding diversity (applicants, institutions).
3. Subjectivity of national/campus committee readers.
4. Large highly-qualified applicant pool.
