
Music 325a: Exercise 3 (extra credit)
Instructions for Exercise 3
I. Technical Goals
- Further familiarization with the Logic Pro project interface.
- Non-destructive audio editing, working with the media bin, audio tracks, and audio events.
- Audio processing using plugins.
- Mixing instrument tracks and audio tracks.
- Drawing automation data to control volume and stereo panning.
III. Find the 325Exercise3 Folder on the SAN Server:
- Login to a computer workstation at the YalMusT Lab.
- Find the CONTENT server on your desktop and open it.
- Locate the "Music 325a Course Materials" folder and open it.
- Find the 325Exercise3 folder. Drag it to your desktop.
Always work from files copied to your local Desktop or home folder. Do not work from files stored on the server!
IV. Create a remixed version of one of the given Nine Inch Nails tracks.
The Exercise 3 folder contains Logic Projects for two Nine Inch Nails tracks: “Echoplex” from The Slip (2008) and “Me, I'm Not” from Year Zero (2007). Trent Reznor has made the multi-track audio for each of these songs (and many more) available at remix.nin.com. Visit the remix site for more details. Note that The Slip, was made available for download free of charge, protected under the Creative Commons attribution Non-commercial Share-alike license.
- Launch Logic Pro.
- Open either of the Logic Projects and listen to the mix.
- Create a remixed version based on your own aesthetic choices:
You may choose to keep the original structure of the song, or
you may choose to completely rework the structure building your own composition from the given audio material.
- Add additional instrument (MIDI) tracks.
- Add additional audio tracks.
V. Save your work to your individual SAN server folder.
When you finish your work session, drag your 325Exercise3 folder to your individual SAN server folder.
VI. Due Tuesday, Oct. 21 in class.
Include this on your Exercise 2 DVD and label as “Music 325 Fall 2008 Exercises 2 and 3”
