
Music 390b: MidTerm Performance Group Project
Guidelines
I. Plan your MidTerm Performance Group Project
- Groups must have five people, i.e., the members of your lab section.
- You may choose the general aesthetic and conceptual approaches for your MidTerm Performance Group Project.
- The requirements for your MidTerm Performance Group Project are:
- Sole use of the Reason project file: 390bMasterMidTermRack.rns.
- Sole use of the MAX/MSP/Jitter project file: 390bMidTermMasterPatch.
- Original audio and visual source material created, processed, and implemented with the two required project files.
- A pre-planned, carefully-structured, and well-rehearsed performance piece 4:00-6:00 minutes in length.
II. Work on your MidTerm Performance Group Project in class/lab as designated.

III. Specific Requirements for the MidTerm Performance Group Project
- Use of the following source clips and data types.
- Required use of "original, pre-prepared" audio and visual source material.
- Compelling, "original, pre-prepared" material that you create.
- Required use of "original, pre-prepared" MIDI data patterning and sequencing:
- 96 "original, pre-prepared" unique patterns, 32 per step sequencer - ReDrum, Matrix #1, and Matrix #2.
- At least 2 or more "original, pre-prepared" sequences, totaling no more than 2:00 in length.
Required use of "original, pre-prepared" live automation data.
- Effective and extensive, "original, pre-prepared" live automation data for the reMix 14:2 in every sequence you create.
- Effective and extensive, "original, pre-prepared" live automation data for the sound modules and effects modules in every sequence you create.
- Required use of "real-time input" of MIDI data.
- Use of the two MidTerm project files.
- Required use of the Reason project file, as designed: 390bMasterMidTermRack.rns.
- Required use of the MAX/MSP/Jitter project file, as programmed: 390bMidTermMasterPatch.
- Use of the three external controllers.
- One Midiman Ozonic MIDI Keyboard Controller.
- Two Belkin Nostromo N45 Game Pad Controllers.
- One Wii Remote Controller.
- Full realization of the five performance roles as delineated in the MAX/MSP/Jitter project file: 390bMidTermMasterPatch.
- Performer #1: Control of the Ozonic MIDI Controller and modules specified in the 390bMasterMidTermRack.rns.
- Performer #2: Control of the Nostromo N45 Game Pad Controller #1 and modules specified in the 390bMasterMidTermRack.rns.
- Performer #3: Control of the Nostromo N45 Game Pad Controller #2 and the visual source material.
- Performer #4: Control of the Wii Remote Controller and modules specified in the 390bMasterMidTermRack.rns.
- Performer #5: Control of the 390bMidTermMasterPatch and modules specified in the 390bMasterMidTermRack.rns
- Impressive execution of your pre-planned, carefully-structured, and well-rehearsed MidTerm Performance Group Project.
- Time requirement: 4:00 to 6:00 minutes in length.
IV. Submit your MidTerm Performance Group Project Proposal the week of Tuesday, Feb. 12th.
V. Present your MidTerm Performance Group Project WIP Report 2/19, 2/20 or 2/21 at your Lab.
Your presentation must include:
- An overview of your aesthetic and conceptual approaches to your MidTerm Performance Group Project.
- A summary of your progress working on your MidTerm Performance Group Project.
- A data CD-R or DVD-R of your original audio and visual source material that was created, then processed, and finally implemented with the 390bMasterMidTermRack.rns and prepared for your MidTerm Performance Group Project.
VI. Perform your finished MidTerm Performance Group Project for Dr. A the week of Feb. 25th.
Present a complete, carefully-structured, and well-rehearsed performance of your MidTerm Performance Group Project.
VII. Perform your finished MidTerm Performance Group Project for class on Tuesday, Mar. 4th.
Present a complete, carefully-structured, and well-rehearsed performance of your MidTerm Performance Group Project.
VIII. Submit your finished MidTerm Performance Group Project Materials on Tuesday, Mar. 4th.
Your final submission of materials must include:
- A final essay describing your finished MidTerm Performance Group Project results included as an .rtf document on your data CD-R or DVD-R.
- A data CD-R or DVD-R with ALL of your various project materials archived on it, and, that’s fully functional!
- Submit to Dr. A on Tuesday, Mar. 4th.
